Geometric shapes and patterns are everywhere, including design. These shapes can be angular or smooth, creating different aesthetics. Some shapes included in geometric design are circles, ovals, crescents, triangles, squares, and hexagons. Geometric shapes are ultimately known as “man-made” shapes, so they are basically shapes that aren’t natural in nature.

Geometry is an essential element of interior design, and understanding the different types of geometric shapes is crucial for designers to create visually appealing and functional spaces.

Tile designs are where you will find lots of your geometric shapes in interior design. Tile is an easy and fun way to throw in some shapes. Whether it is a simple hexagon or penny rounds floor, or a statement wall with interesting geometric shapes.

Advantages of Using Geometric Shapes in Interior Design

  1. Visual Appeal: Geometric shapes are commonly used in interior design because they give that unique and lasting impression.
  2. Spatial Illusion: Certain spatial patterns may make a room appear bigger or smaller than it is.
  3. Balance and Harmony: Design using geometric shapes promotes unity within the whole house by creating balance and harmony.

Squares:

When using squares in geometric design it can be incorporated in various different ways. A tasteful way to add squares into your home could be by making a black and white checkerboard floor, or by adding accents of smaller squares in your bathroom tile design.

Triangles:

One of the icons in geometric design, patterns with triangles are confident and dynamic and will make your room feel interesting and energized. Try to remain conservative when adding triangles to your space so that it doesn’t become too overwhelming. It’s much more tasteful to stick with one or two and to use them sparingly.

Circles:

Much like with squares, it’s easy to make circular geometric patterns in interior design. Simply add a penny tile in the size of your choice to your bathroom or kitchen floor or backsplash to incorporate a circular shape. It’s a good idea to contrast strong-lined geometric shapes with the right grout to create balance and harmony.

While the Ancient Greeks were known to be early adopters of geometric design in their interiors because of how they achieved structure and serenity, certain shapes will always feel that bit more daring and unique. Add a hexagon through tile, wall sconce, or even coasters to achieve that edgy look that hexagon tile brings. Another variation of extra elongated hexagon tiles is picket tiles. When incorporating picket shape tiles, consider the scale of the pattern in relation to your space. In smaller areas, they can create an illusion of more space, while in larger areas, they can serve as a striking design feature.

Herringbone:

Herringbone is a timeless geometric pattern in interior design that features a series of parallel lines arranged in a zigzag pattern. It’s a popular choice for flooring, tiles, wallpaper and even textiles. What’s more, the herringbone pattern can add a sense of texture, depth and visual interest to a space.
